In "Blue Ocean Strategy: Creating your Own Market", Max Freedman, the author (along with contributing writers C. Edwards and K. Harrison) lays out the basics of a having a blue ocean strategy, which, in its simplest terms, is about "helping your company gain uncontested market space separate from other, similar businesses."

Pros of a Blue Ocean Strategy point to the benefits of avoiding saturated markets and introducing growth potential. Both attractive benefits, to be sure. On the con side, we should consider that at blue ocean strategy may be too ambitious, too risky and may not be permanent as successful initiatives likely would attract imitators. Both pros and cons should be in forefront of any market analysis. The key to exceptional business success, the authors points out, is to redefine the terms of competition and move into the blue ocean, where you have the water to yourself keeping in mind that the goal of such a strategy is not to beat the competition, but to make the competition irrelevant.

According Freedman, "the best offense … is to make a blue ocean shift and create your own blue ocean. Imitation is not the path to success, especially in the overcrowded industries most companies today confront."

"When there is limited room to grow, businesses should try to look for verticals to find new sectors where they can enjoy uncontested market share." In closing, the authors note, "perhaps it is time for businesses to stop competing and start creating."

The Leadership Odyssey

An article on the new leadership that's worth stealing a few moments from your busy schedule; indeed it's a subject particularly appropriate for these "most interesting" times. What makes a good leader and leadership in general continues to be a hot topic and for that I am thankful because one need not look too far in analyzing the success or failure of an organization. That's a point of view only. How can leaders successfully shift from the more traditional leadership skills to "people skills." We understand from this article, that the terms “soft skills” and “people skills” can refer to a wide range of competencies and capabilities. For most executives, this may represent a confusing road ahead. What are the rules of the road? The article notes that "No leader who has built a career on making expert contributions and exercising hands-on control can be expected to make the leap overnight to a people-centric style." Certainly encouraging, I suppose. Three stages of discovery are put forth to demonstrate how executives can arrive at this "new understanding," this self-revelation, if you will, of who they are as leaders. In the end, one can agree or not with the authors' leadership model. I would suggest that where you stand relative to your leadership skills in leading a team or an organization forward, depends on your proven experiences and your ability to be creative, adaptive, innovative and results oriented. That may well mark me as "old school."

Mega Trends Defining Post-Coronavirus Environment

B of A Securities. Global Banking & Markets did an interesting piece looking at a few megatrends that are worth pondering a little deeper. The author, Haim Israel of B of A, notes that the "coronavirus is not just a temporary crisis, it’s a permanent disruptor. It’s one of those rare events in history that will completely reshape geopolitics, societies and markets.” My personal belief is that he is likely not that far off and more than likely we will see others joining him in his circle. Many of these trends, according to the author will affect "everything from geopolitics to healthcare to technology." And in some cases, the author notes, "the virus has sped up trends that were already underway, but might have taken five years or more to unfold without the pandemic." We are seeing some tectonic shifts. That's some pondering.

Can ESG Create Value?

It's pretty clear cut that as executives consider how to reinvent their companies following the COVID-19 pandemic, many will find it helpful to factor ESG issues into their plans. Industry statistics will likely support the fact ESG creates business value. The article notes that there is "a significant correlation between a company’s resource efficiency and the strength of its financial performance." That translates into employees having not just satisfaction but also performing better. The flipside is that a "questionable environmental record...can lower productivity.

Research has shown that chess masters don’t approach a game with a master plan that they rigidly execute. Nor do they just react to the moves of their opponents. You  have to weave the traits together to work seamlessly. The very word "strategy" may, in  some quarters, elicit a subtle yawn, perhaps a raised eyebrow or even an embarrassed look away. Rethinking Business in Africa

Certainly quite an interesting report. Although slightly dated for our instantaneous times, really little, I suspect, has fundamentally changed. We still look towards countries such as Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa as the principal engines of growth on the continent and in all likelihood they to continue be in that role, but let us not overlook countries like Morocco where there is a very safe investment climate generally speaking and towards the United States, specifically. I would also include Egypt in the growth category as well as I see them as an emerging growth, a breakout nation if you will.

As the author so aptly notes, "the anemic trade and investment between the United States and sub-Saharan Africa" is most surely due to a long standing weariness about market opportunities, business horror stories  and, of course, you must add, as you have, that lingering whiff of long standing corruption and a challenging investment milieu that remains.

Cross-Border "Virtual Marketing" Part 1

Working through these COVID times and being in international sales manager represents quite a challenge. On the one hand, senior management is more than happy with their existing  travel budgets all but intact. Unprecedented times for a budget conscious manager. To compensate for any perceived valuable marketing loss time, they warmly embrace the thinking that a virtual marketing platform will suffice quite well and in many cases, that point of view is not misplaced especially for sales on the domestic side of the equation.
